136 meters in length. Three jibs of 450 m² each made with our Multi Micro Structure (MMS™) technology also used for 4T FORTE production. October 2025: the Neoliner Origin completes the first commercial Atlantic crossing under wind propulsion. It's not just a ship. It's proof that the future of maritime transport can be different, and that our materials are ready for this revolution.
The "Neoliner Origin" is the largest wind-propelled cargo ship ever built. With its 136 meters in length and a cargo capacity of 5,300 tons, it represents a turning point in the history of commercial maritime transport.
The project was born in 2015 from the vision of Neoline, a company founded by a group of French Merchant Navy officers led by Captain Michel Péry and Jean Zanuttini. Convinced that climate change would push the maritime sector toward new propulsion systems, they developed a revolutionary concept: a cargo ship designed from the beginning to sail primarily under sail, not simply equipped with sails as support.
The goal is ambitious but concrete: decarbonize maritime transport. Today the sector is responsible for 3% of global greenhouse gas emissions. The Neoliner Origin responds to this challenge by using wind as the main propulsion system, reducing emissions by up to 80-90% compared to conventional cargo ships of the same size.
The choice to rely on us was not random. Membranes were needed as sustainable as the project itself: produced with low-emission processes, recyclable through the polyethylene supply chain. But above all, absolute reliability was needed. These sails face exceptional loads, Atlantic storms, continuous operation. They cannot fail. This is why we dedicated months to CFD analysis, advanced simulations, tests under extreme load. Every fiber was designed to withstand conditions that no other sail in the world must face.
On October 16, 2025, it completed the first commercial Atlantic crossing under wind propulsion of the modern era. Saint-Nazaire – Saint-Pierre et Miquelon – Halifax – Baltimore. Eight days, full cargo, clients like Renault, LVMH, Clarins, Manitou. The result: up to 80% fewer emissions, wind as primary propulsion for 60-70% of the voyage, commercial speed 11 knots.
For Flexon Composites, it means bringing our technology where it really matters: to projects that change entire industries. Every month the Neoliner Origin sails, we confirm that our materials are ready for the most ambitious challenges.
This project brings the Italian excellence of our technologies to the heart of the global ecological transition. Every time the Neoliner Origin crosses the Atlantic, we confirm that a different future is not just possible—it's already here.
